Job Description:
The MetroHealth System, Cuyahoga Countys public health system,
and its staff of nearly 8,000 provides care at MetroHealths four
hospitals, four emergency departments and more than 20 health
centers and 40 additional sites throughout Cuyahoga County. The
health system is home to Cuyahoga Countys most experienced Level I
Adult Trauma Center, verified since 1992, and Ohios only adult and
pediatric trauma and burn center. As an academic medical center,

staff physician holds a faculty appointment at Case Western Reserve
University School of Medicine. Our main campus hospital houses a
Cleveland Metropolitan School District high school of science and

**Summary:**
Performs non-sworn police duties, including tasks associated with
police dispatch operations, badge office operations on an as needed
basis, issuing required badges/vouchers from the dispatch center,
community relations, and maintaining the lost and found. Performs a
variety of duties related to radio dispatching, emergency
communications, and alarm/video monitoring. Promotes positive
public/staff relations, and uphold the reputation of the Department
of Public Safety. Upholds the mission, vision, values, and customer
service standards of The MetroHealth System.
**Responsibilities:**
1. Performs duties related to police dispatching, including:
a. Answering all radio calls.
b. Maintaining radio contact with Police Officers.
c. Handling inquires received via a variety of sources (i.e. the
telephone) involving police, fire, and medical emergencies.
d. Receiving emergency and routine calls for service.
e. Dispatching police units to areas of The MetroHealth Systems
Main Campus, and other system-wide locations as required.
f. Entering, updating, and retrieving police-related data from
computer and teletype networks, and inputting that information into
the daily log of all calls for which field units were
initiated/dispatched.
g. Making inquiries/entries through local, state, and federal
information computer systems.
h. Assisting sworn field personnel by searching records/requesting
information from other law enforcement agencies in conjunction with
field investigations being carried on by department personnel.
i. Compiling information and preparing reports as requested by
department administration.
2. Monitors closed-circuit televisions and alarms by:
a. Observing TV monitors.
b. Informing officers of activities monitored by TV cameras.
c. Monitoring, acknowledging, and directing the response to
alarms.
d. Operating the access control and closed-circuit camera
systems.
3. Assists individuals who come to the public walk-in counter.
4. Serves as back-up operational support to the badge office on an
as needed basis by:
a. Operating the FBI/State of Ohio computerized fingerprint system
while maintaining the confidentiality of the system.
b. Operating the computerized identification system, and generating
identification badges.
5. Performs administrative duties related to police reports and
dispatch, including:
a. Processing, typing, transcribing, filing, recording, and
retrieving a wide variety of police records/reports/forms/
memos/letters/complaints/court documents that may involve
information that is confidential in nature.
b. Assembling/typing materials, rough drafts, and verbal
instructions, including transcribing equipment/tapes; correcting
errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
c. Filing various types of documents/records/reports by
alphabetical, numerical, and subject matter classifications.
6. Incorporates principles of teamwork in the resolution,
completion, and follow-up of responsibilities.
7. Keeps current with trends, developments, and practices in the
field as they relate to this work assignment.
8. Performs other functionally related duties as assigned.
**Qualifications:**
Required:
Age 18 or higher. HS Diploma or passage of a high school
equivalency exam. Able to pass a background check that is
acceptable to the Law Enforcement Automated Data System (LEADS)
program for the State of Ohio. Possesses or obtains a LEADS
terminal operator certification within 60 days of hire, AND
maintains certification throughout employment. Obtains any other
required certifications for law enforcement databases used by the
Department of Public Safety as needed. 1 year of experience in
Police, Fire, Security, or similar dispatching. Basic PC skills.
Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Possess a high-level of integrity while handling
sensitive/confidential data and resources.
Preferred:
2 years of experience as a police dispatcher. Possess one or more
9-1-1 Dispatcher Certifications, including but not exclusively from
the National Emergency Communication Institute (NECI) or the
Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO).
Exceptional attention to detail.
Physical Requirements:
May sit, stand, stoop, bend, and ambulate intermittently during the
day. May need to sit or stand for extended periods. See in the
normal visual range with or without correction. Visual acuity for
close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Hear
in the normal audio range with or without correction. Hear and
detect radio traffic, ringing telephones, and alarm tones while
speaking on radio communications equipment/the telephone. Finger
dexterity to operate office equipment required. May need to lift up
to twenty-five (25) pounds on occasion. Ability to communicate in
face-to-face, phone, email, and other communications. Ability to
see computer monitor and departmental documents. Ability to operate
a radio microphone or console equipment. Frequent exposure to
continual background noise, static, and additional ancillary noise
from communications/telecommunications/office equipment.
