Job Description:
Responsibilities:
- Leads local work group in daily operations including staffing,
service levels, quality and safety.
- Ensures phlebotomy collections are performed within established
turn-around times and ensures specimens are processed in a timely
manner upon receipt in the Laboratory.
- Performs blood collection for Extended Care clients and
provides service to their residents who are mostly geriatric while
following proper protocol when collecting samples. -
- Performs specimen processing and send out tasks including
accessioning, and packaging for transport when necessary for all
specimen types.
- Monitors and distributes daily workload among the traveling
outreach phlebotomy team and processing workstations.
- Helps to ensure proper staffing and workload levels and assists
with covering any staffing issues.
- Assists with investigating and resolving routine operational
problems and patient issues and escalates complex problems to Team
Lead.
- Ensures that each problem requisition - is documented in
accordance to the lab's documentation guidelines
- Performs monthly inspections and quality check on laboratory
equipment & supplies.
- Facilitates development & training for new staff and peer
sponsor during their new hire period.
- Assists with supervisory duties when needed.
- Participates in hiring process as well as input on employee
performance, including corrective actions and evaluations.
- Assists the Team Lead in developing, training and delivering
educational programs for both the traveling outreach phlebotomy
team and our Extended Care Clients.
- Builds a strong working relationship with internal and/or
external customers to meet their needs.
- Complies with department and institute financial targets.
- Travels to patient locations, these include but are not limited
to client's facilities, and house calls.
- Perform other duties as assigned. Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Graduation certificate from a formal accredited Phlebotomy
program required.
- Associate's Degree preferred. Certifications:
- Proof of Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the
American Heart Association must be presented upon hire or within
the first 3 months of employment.
- ASCP Phlebotomy Certification preferred.
- A current, valid Driver License is required as well as personal
auto liability insurance coverage with the limits of $100,000 per
person/$300,000 per accident on bodily injury, and $100,000 in
property liability damage required. Competencies (Complexity of

visitors and others. Work Experience:
- Two years of (current) phlebotomy experience required; 3 or
more years of experience preferred.
- Experienced and proficient in blood collection from all
patients. (EX: Senior Nursing Facilities, Rehabilitation Centers,
Assisted Living Facilities, or private homes)
- Experienced with the handling/transport of Laboratory
specimens, laboratory safety, medical terminology and laboratory
waste management. Physical Requirements:
- Requires frequent standing and walking.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to manipulate blood drawing
equipment and make measurements.
- Visual acuity including the ability to distinguish colors.
- This position is primarily traveling in nature.
- The average amount of lifting is 10 pounds with occasional
carrying of objects up to 20 pounds
- Work requires finger dexterity and eye hand coordination
- Working irregular hours including On-call hours
- Exposure to blood and body fluids, communicable diseases,
chemicals, radiation, and repetitive motions.
- Pushing and pulling heavy objects
- Position requires reaching, bending, stooping, and handling
objects with hands and/or fingers, talking and/or hearing, and
seeing. Personal Protective Equipment:
- Follow standard precautions using personal protective
equipment. The Lead Outreach Phlebotomy Technician assists the Team
Leader by coordinating the daily activities of the Outreach
Phlebotomy Technicians. The Lead shall perform technical work as
well as assist with some supervisory duties. Ensures phlebotomy
collections are performed within established turn-around times and
ensures specimens are processed in a timely manner upon receipt in
the Laboratory. Monitors and distributes daily workload among the
traveling outreach phlebotomy team and processing
workstations.
