Job Description:
Overview: Shear machines are used to cut bars of steel to
specified dimensions and angles by adjusting machine dials in
respect to the specific job orders before positioning and clamping
stops and/or side guides which set the length and ensure the angle
of eat cut. The Shear Operator is responsible for the initial
startup of their shear machine including conducting any relevant
safety checks within the immediate work area and manning the shear
machine accordingly throughout the duration of shift. Essential
Duties and Responsibilities: Start up, check and operate the Shear
machine along with other related equipment as required Prioritize
and organize shear orders according to product specifications and
demand Review and compare bar code labels and shop cutting orders
to ensure they correspond. Report any discrepancies to supervisor
Thoroughly inspect the shear machine by verifying blade position
and ensuring dial selections are properly set for precise cuttings
to reduce scrap Cross check the length of the parts sheared to the
length and bar diameter specified on the shop cutting order Verify
the raw material inventory and product labels and review
availability of necessary staging racks Immediately notify
supervisor of all safety concerns, equipment faults, breakdowns or
other relevant impacts to production or quality such as improper
cuttings, lack of stock, no available racks, full racks, or a full
slug bucket. Follow all plant rules and safety regulations. Perform
other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities: This role
has no supervisory responsibilities. Education and/or Experience:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred.
One to three months related experience and/or training preferred.
Key Competencies Communication Skills: Ability to read and write
simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to
effectively report data and job specific information as needed.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic mathematics. Computer
Skills: Ability to navigate basic technology including but not
limited to use of digital self-service platforms, time clocks, and
other systems where applicable. Additional Preferred Skills and
Experience: Previous experience in manufacturing environments or a
mechanical aptitude Experience using: hand tools, pneumatic tools,
tape measure, micrometers, calipers and dial indicators. Previous
experience operating shear machine, overhead cranes, jib crane or
other related lifting devices Satisfactory completion of Bennett
Mechanical Comprehension Test Preferred Physical Demands: Stand,
walk, push, pull, squat, bend, and reach during shifts Use carts,
dollies, cranes and jacks to transport material if needed Climbing
ladders and stairs to reach work at potential heights of 30ft or
more Navigate narrow walkways, confined spaces and overhead
mezzanines Tolerate potentially extreme temperature fluctuations
impacted by weather and machinery Acclimate to high noise and
vibration levels in work spaces Wear and adhere to all PPE
guidelines including hard hats, protective eye wear, ear plugs, and
approved footwear with metatarsal and steel toe safeguards. Must be
able to regularly lift and or move up to 40 bs. Work Environment:
The Shear Operator will work within our Forge facility interacting
with historic machinery which often involves proximity to heat,
noise, debris, conveyance systems and other potentially dangerous
equipment. The Shear Operator will encounter high levels of floor
and overhead traffic due to material transportation throughout the
facility which can cause high levels of vibration and airborne
disturbances. There are areas of paved and unpaved walkway, active
shipping lanes and occasionally standing water to be cautious of.
