The Visual Designer works with a multi-disciplinary team of stakeholders to provide the necessary direction, assets, and support to ensure products ship with high-quality and coherent visual design, while acknowledging limitations and tradeoffs. A successful candidate will partner with user experience specialists, product managers, medical practitioners, and engineers worldwide to solve complex problems with simple, intuitive, yet robust designs.

Key Responsibilities

Apply and evolve our design system

  • Apply a multi-product and multi-platform design system to a range of products, to deliver a cohesive product ecosystem
  • Work with other visual designers to evolve the design system, based on product needs, user feedback, and industry trends, so that it can continue to serve an expanding suite of products
  • Collaborate with peers throughout the product ecosystem to drive cross-functional alignment, define strategy and guide the direction of our design system
  • Provide direction and leadership to designers working on their project teams
    Shipping design
    • Explore a range of divergent visual design solutions, informed by a wide range of data sources
    • Produce a wide variety of pixel-perfect visual design artifacts to communicate design concepts effectively
    • Evolve or icon library, by adding clear and understandable icons to communicate highly specific and often complex concepts
    • Evaluate proposed design solutions against pre-determined quality and success criteria and articulate the rationale behind design decisions
    • Work closely with researchers to plan research activities, uncover unmet needs, and constantly validate that the design solutions meet all safety requirements
    • Work closely with engineering teams to ensure products are built as designed, and with product management to ensure visual fixes are prioritized
      Executing within the enterprise-level medical environment constraints
      • Deliver visual solutions that ensure new products meet or exceed our customers' expectations of quality and innovation, while ensuring an appropriate level of visual coherence with our legacy products
      • Lead the visual design activities for your program, according to our internal work instruction
      • Ensure all required Design documentation comply with the IEC 62366-1:2015 specification
        Collaborating to learn and grow
        • Partner with design peers to understand and apply the long-term UX strategy and process, to ensure UX is always embedded in key stages of the overall development process
        • Actively engage with other designers to give and solicit feedback to continually ensure that the design solutions are smart and safe to use
        • Actively share feedback and comments on others' work to help them grow in their field
          Requirements
          • BA/BS degree
          • 8+ years of experience delivering great visual design within a UX or product team
          • Advanced visual design skills; we use Figma, Sketch, Photoshop, Illustrator, and we are open to experimenting with other tools that can help the team
          • Experience working in the healthcare domain with design control, regulatory practices, and standards for medical devices or similar regulated industries is an asset
          • Knowledge of agile software development methods is highly desired
          • Great communication and presentation skills that speak to a broad range of audiences
          • Have an online portfolio or a PDF portfolio that can be shared along with the application.

            • Strong experience working side-by-side with engineers and product managers to build intuitive experiences
            • Demonstrable will to solve problems, big and small, glamorous or not, for all kinds of users.
            • Effectively manages personal priorities under stress
            • Able to focus on mid-to long-term objectives while managing short-term tactics and operational decisions
            • Understanding of the importance of setting aside the time and space to learn and grow your design practice
