The Role: TEGNA is looking for a self-motivated, dynamic, and experienced communications leader to join our team as Director, Communications & Media Relations. The successful candidate has a mix of managing communications at media, journalism, and public companies. They are passionate about local journalism, believe in making a difference and strive to create outstanding results. A key position on the Corporate Communications team, the Director creates opportunities to build our company's reputation and brand and maintain trust with our audiences. They are a proven, proactive leader with a knack for anticipating what is needed, managing multiple projects, and developing and executing campaigns that communicate TEGNA's purpose, business strategy and results to stakeholders. They will partner across TEGNA's business and with stations and will frequently be at the center of cross-functional teams working on announcements, projects, or campaigns. The ideal candidate generates creative ideas and is an excellent storyteller with outstanding writing skills. They have established media relationships, extensive experience managing press interactions and are responsible for regularly pitching stories about TEGNA. They can effectively navigate within a corporate environment, and make high-judgment decisions, while acting quickly. Most importantly, the successful candidate is motivated by a fast-paced environment where redefining the way we do things is welcome and impactful results are expected. What You'll Be Doing: * Develop communications initiatives and campaigns to share the company's vision and business strategy to key audiences; includes managing communications for TEGNA's content transformation, news innovation and journalism, original programming, digital initiatives, and marketing solutions * Support corporate announcements including quarterly earnings, deals, acquisitions, and investments * Develop executive remarks, press releases, talking points, briefing documents, Q&As, annual company reports, social content and other materials as needed for company news * Conduct proactive media outreach to business, media, trade, and advertising reporters * Create clear, concise, and consistent messaging and positioning for the company via strategic communications advice and counsel * Support TEGNA stations' communications needs, including drafting press releases and drafting messaging and handling media relations * Raise the profile of key executives by driving thought leadership content, press interviews, speaking opportunities, and other activities * Oversee development of event presentations (i.e., Annual Meeting of Shareholders, TEGNA Town Halls, Employee Awards), corporate videos and other visual communications materials; includes developing, gathering, designing, and developing editorial content, scripts, and video * Provide oversight and direction to corporate social media channels * Provide guidance and direction to outside PR agencies and department staff members * Work with Chief Communications Officer to define metrics that will enable accurate measurement of the effectiveness of communications campaigns * This position is based in Tysons, Virginia. What You Bring: * 10+ years' experience in corporate communications or media relations managing communications for a media or journalism organization; experience should include managing communications at a publicly traded company with experience in investor communications a plus * Bachelor's degree, preferably in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, or similar field * Excellent writing skills with proven experience writing for senior executives; grammar guru and strong proofreader with an excellent attention to detail * Must have established relationships with business, media, trade, and advertising reporters * Must be equal-parts strategic thinker and tireless tactical performer * Experience in effectively managing issues and crises; availability to work after hours or on the weekend, as needed * Superior project manager who takes the initiative and manages projects independently; must be extremely organized, detail-oriented with an ability to develop solutions and handle many tasks in a deadline-driven environment * Experience in effectively navigating complex organizations, working with senior executives, and developing strategies to communicate an organization's vision and business strategy * Strong judgment and confidence to engage and build consensus with stakeholders, executives, and colleagues at all levels * High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism About TEGNA TEGNA Inc.
