This role is full-time rotating days and nights. Day/Night availability is required. Title and starting pay rate of this position may vary based on years of experience. The role includes leadership, partnership, teamwork, and supervision. The Professional Staff Nurse fosters collaborative relationships with physicians, healthcare providers, patients, and families to achieve optimal outcomes across the continuum of care. This nurse demonstrates commitment to both the community and the nursing profession. Responsibilities Relationship Building & Professionalism Builds productive, respectful working relationships within and outside the unit. Demonstrates accountability, motivation, enthusiasm, and commitment to patients and colleagues. Promotes cultural awareness and holds peers accountable for maintaining healthy work relationships. Models work–life balance, safe work hours, effective time management, and healthy lifestyle choices. Identifies and reports workplace safety hazards. Patient & Staff Education Demonstrates knowledge of adult (and, when applicable, pediatric) learning principles. Provides thorough education to patients and families to support them through the care episode and transitions of care. Supports the growth of students, new staff, and colleagues; may serve as a preceptor. Encourages open dialogue and continuous learning by seeking feedback and improving practice. Clinical Practice & Care Delivery Applies the nursing process within the Relationship-Based Care framework to promote a healing environment. Develops daily goals and plans of care in partnership with patients, considering holistic needs. Uses critical thinking to identify clinical, social, psychological, spiritual, and safety-related patient issues. Communicates effectively with the healthcare team, clearly articulating patient conditions and advocating for care adjustments. Ensures comprehensive, accurate documentation that supports coordination of care. Incorporates professional standards and organizational goals to improve patient safety, quality, and satisfaction. Creates a compassionate, patient-centered experience for patients, families, and colleagues. Professional Development & Team Engagement Demonstrates accountability for ongoing professional development and improved patient care quality. Actively participates in unit-based shared governance, goal setting, and change initiatives. Engages fully as a collaborative care team partner and supports team members as needed. Quality & Evidence-Based Practice Participates in unit or department-specific quality improvement efforts. This includes understanding principles of growth and development across the lifespan and applying that knowledge to assess patient status, interpret age?specific needs, and deliver care in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. Experience & Education 0–2 years of nursing experience required BSN preferred Skills & Abilities Ability to build and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, advanced practice providers, ancillary staff, support services, department colleagues, and patients/families Ability to work effectively in a complex environment, manage multiple or shifting priorities, and operate specialized equipment Strong clinical judgment with demonstrated critical thinking, analytical, and problem?solving skills across all aspects of patient care Ability to apply and guide others in applying the nursing process Adequate mobility, visual acuity, and manual dexterity Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and patient positioning Scheduling Options UPMC offers various flexible scheduling programs in addition to traditional rotating or flexible shifts. Special programs are available for primarily night?shift or weekend?shift work and include a premium pay differential. Employees must have at least 6 months of nursing experience to qualify for these programs. Orientation for these programs may need to be completed during regular business hours. If interested, applicants should notify their recruiter during the interview process. Licensure, Certifications & Clearances UPMC?approved national nursing certification preferred Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse (RN) in the state where the facility is located, or an RN license from a state participating in the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) CPR/BLS (AHA) required within 30 days of hire (must include didactic and hands?on skills demonstration) Graduate Nurses must: Complete the licensure exam within 6 months of hire or within 1 year of graduation , whichever comes first Use of temporary practice permits follows state regulations; however, UPMC requires GNs to test within 6 months of start date or face termination or demotion at the business unit’s discretion NLC Residency Note: Employees working under an out?of?state NLC license who later move to the state where the facility is located must apply for state licensure within 60 days of changing residency.
