Job Description:
GENERAL SUMMARY
Is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the
laboratory, in accordance with the established hospital and
department policies and standards. Will play a lead role in the
strategic planning process and the implementation of initiatives
focused on enhanced performance, workflow redesign, and developing
a culture that emphasizes excellence in the quality and delivery of
laboratory services.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Assumes responsibility for the daily operational needs of the
department and provides ongoing support to staff activities to
ensure that effective, efficient, and quality services are
consistently provided. Acts as a clinical resource to all
staff.
Readily and accurately identifies opportunities for improvement
relating to the delivery of laboratory services, quality-of-work
life, and patient care issues. Works collaboratively with the
supervisors and managers across departmental lines, to implement
solutions and take steps to improve departmental performance. Leads
the departments Press Ganey/HCAHPS patient satisfaction program
With guidance form the laboratory director and the director of
revenue services, coordinates the activities of the laboratory
Medicare compliance program. Responsible for updating and revising,
as needed. The compliance plan and maintaining accurate and current
coding of the laboratory procedures on the departmental charge
master.
Maintains compliance with regulatory, accrediting, and hospital
policy for patient services, personnel management, and
environmental safety. Chairs the laboratory safety committee and,
together with the Director of the department, is responsible for
consistent compliance with all laboratory safety-related
guidelines, policies, and procedures.
a. Maintains procedure manuals and adheres to the laboratory's
Document Control policies/procedures.
b. Keeps current in the field of laboratory medicine and takes an
active role in the education of the laboratory staff and other
healthcare professionals.
c. Keeps current with the CAP checklist standards and pursues and
active role with the onsite and offsite inspections.
d. Maintains appropriate communications with staff regarding
procedural changes, updates within the lab.
Ensures timely, thorough investigation and follow-up of incidents
relating to laboratory performance and assists staff as needed, in
implementing appropriate corrective actions to prevent or minimize
recurrence. Will keep the director informed as to significant
issues relating to service, quality, and patient care.
Assists the director in managing an effective, comprehensive
performance improvement process, that is outcome driven and
establishes a culture of excellence in quality and service.
Provides ongoing support in collecting and analyzing data, and
preparing reports.
Manages the education and training programs in the laboratory,
including orientation, competency assessment, and inservice
education for all sections of the laboratory, In collaboration with
the Director and Medical Technologist II of the department,
develops an preceptor program to enhance the quality and
consistency of all departmental educational activities. manages and
administrates the CAP Competency Assessment Program for staff.
Actively participates in departmental and hospital wide committees
as assigned. Effectively communicates information and activities
with the staff and solicits input.
Serves as a resource to managers throughout the organization.
Leads the Laboratory outreach program: maintains communication with
Medical Care, LLC offices promotes testing menu, works to increase
testing volumes and services offered (recruits new business, i.e.
nursing homes, etc.)
Attends all required safety training programs that can describe his
or her responsibilities related to general safety,
department/service safety, and specific job related hazards.
a. Attends all required safety education programs.
b. Completes Education Day, required in-services, required
readings, and other competency requirements in a timely manner.
c. Operates assigned equipment and performs all procedures in a
safe manner as instructed.
d. Maintains work area and equipment in the condition required by
department standards.
e. Demonstrates proper body mechanics in all functions.
f. As Supervisor, provides for the safety of department
employees.
Responsibly follows the hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne
and airborne pathogens.
a. Demonstrates knowledge of techniques, procedures, and correct
use of protective barrier equipment.
