DIRECTOR OF DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION (UPPER SCHOOL CAMPUS) Hawken School seeks teachers and leaders comfortable taking risks and embracing a growth mindset. THE POSITION Hawken School is seeking an individual to join a collaborative team of administrators and teachers working toward an inclusive culture based in progressive pedagogy and social equity. This position is new in the 2021-2022 school year to support the continued work of our Fair Play Initiative. This is an exciting opportunity to work collaboratively to create and design curriculum and programming for students and faculty using nascent frameworks that are ripe for cultivation and growth and to ensure that equitable and inclusive practices are essential to the culture of Hawken Upper School. The DIRECTOR of DIVERSITY, EQUITY & INCLUSION will work with the administration, faculty, and students to carry out our Fair Play initiative and ensure that diversity, equity, justice, belonging, and inclusion are integrated throughout every aspect of the community and curriculum. In alignment with the School's core values, the Director will plan and execute new and existing organization-wide DEI initiatives, professional development sessions, policies, and systems to foster inclusivity, diversity, and equity across campus. As a member of the Upper School administrative team, the Director must be a strategic leader who is passionate about DEI work and who will strive to strengthen and build holistic DEI strategy for the Upper School. Responsibilities include:

  • Partner with the Director of the Upper School to develop and lead initiatives in the work of social justice, diversity, equity and inclusion while helping to support and grow existing programming.
  • Serve as a resource for faculty with respect to curriculum design and fluidity, and student support. Specifically, promote, advise upon, and support curriculum development aimed at teaching and learning to think critically about cultural diversity; collaborate with both individual faculty members and departments to develop courses and curricula that include the study of race, gender, ethnicity, nation and nationhood, class, and religion and their intersections within societies and across borders.
  • Act as liaison to and develop strong relationships with the various diversity and inclusion related groups in the school, and respond to diversity- and equity-related issues among the student body as they arise.
  • Support and develop student leadership in matters related to diversity, inclusion, equity, and justice. Specifically, facilitate student attendance at local, regional, and national conferences related to equity education and work with the advisors and leadership of student affinity groups, diversity council, and student senate to address emerging needs and interest at the Upper School campus.
  • Partner with fellow diversity-oriented leaders on the PS-8 campus to plan and/or establish structures and systems to support the growing work, emerging needs and interests across divisions.
  • Partner with the administrative team in prioritizing campus needs in the area of diversity and equity.
  • Collaborate to help the school sustain and grow our welcoming and inclusive community by building and fostering relationships in the community. QUALIFICATIONS
    • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in education, education administration, or related field preferred
    • Experience as a teacher and teacher leader with strong knowledge of research based pedagogy, curriculum and child and adolescent development
    • Demonstrated experience with the development of new programming, especially in the areas of diversity, equity, justice, belonging, and inclusion
    • Ability to work flexibly and collaboratively across different groups or teams of people
    • Demonstrated leadership success in carrying out School identified goals and initiatives and in leading groups of people
    • Program development experience with ability to assess initiatives and track progress
    • Willingness and eagerness to assist in the life of the School
